Wall Paper/Painting/Paneling Date a Room

When walls are decorated with unusual materials or images or paint styles, they seem to date the room very quickly.  See these images below:

The Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement,1970

How amazing would this room be with the tile left in place, a more contemporary stair railing, neutral walls, and a classic dining set used?  These paneled walls with the pickled effect.  There's that 1970s obsession with the outdoors in the giant, to the floor, window.

Better Homes and Gardens Stretching Living Space,1983

House Beautiful Decorating Style, 1992

Sponging and ragging was all the rage when I was beginning to realize how much I loved decorating (as a teenager).  I'm still a little shocked to see just how passe it is now.

Natural Color Palettes, 2000

Still the paint effects were big in 2000.  That was a really common thing to see on cable decorating shows back in the day.  Maybe this will be dated too:, How to Decorate with Wallpaper

But I don't think that this will:, A Catskill Cottage with a Modern Sensibility
