Wall Paper/Painting/Paneling Date a Room

When walls are decorated with unusual materials or images or paint styles, they seem to date the room very quickly.  See these images below:

How amazing would this room be with the tile left in place, a more contemporary stair railing, neutral walls, and a classic dining set used?  These paneled walls with the pickled effect.  There's that 1970s obsession with the outdoors in the giant, to the floor, window.

Sponging and ragging was all the rage when I was beginning to realize how much I loved decorating (as a teenager).  I'm still a little shocked to see just how passe it is now.

Still the paint effects were big in 2000.  That was a really common thing to see on cable decorating shows back in the day.  Maybe this will be dated too:
